Cardiac Risk in the Young

21st August 2017

Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning attended a local fundraising event that raised over £600 for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) Mazza Indian Restaurant in Marlowes.

CRY works to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death by promoting and developing heart-screening programmes and funding medical research.

The event was organised by Mandy Taylor and the Mazza chefs on behalf of Paul and Nicola Merriman in memory of their son Richard who collapsed and died whilst playing football aged just 27.

Mike said:

“I pay tribute to the great work of the Merriman family and their friends who do such a fantastic job raising money for CRY and who have also organised cardiac screening events at local schools.”

Nicola said:

“Thank you to Mandy and the kind people at Mazza who organised this charity night, they were amazing. It was such a wonderful thing to do for us in our son's memory for his birthday. It helps a great deal with our loss, especially when wonderful people go out of their way to help us save young people's lives from this devastating heart condition sudden cardiac death.

“This money will help us screen many more young people's hearts and save more lives.”
