Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning has written to St Albans District Council and The Crown Estate about the allocation of affordable homes in the proposed East Hemel development.
The development, although called “East Hemel”, is in fact totally within the St Albans District boundary. However, for all practical purposes the new homes will be an extension of the town of Hemel Hempstead.
Mike has long called for St Albans to work with Dacorum so that both the housing allocation numbers for planning purposes and the future allocation of affordable housing are shared between the two Districts.
The Planning Inspector has said that St Albans must co-operate with Dacorum, but St Albans challenged this with legal proceedings – which they have just lost. Mike has now met informally with the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and called on the Government to work to resolve this.
“It is clear that Dacorum will end up footing the bill for this major expansion of Hemel Hempstead. All the services and infrastructure will be Hemel based. It is common sense – and of course the right thing to do – to share allocations between the two Districts.”
