In a joint letter to the Leader of Hertfordshire County Council and the Home Secretary, all eleven Hertfordshire MPs are backing closer working between Police and Fire Services.
In their letter, the MPs say are supporting the move as bringing Police and Fire into a single governance structure under the existing Police and Crime Commissioner makes financial sense.
Mike Penning said:
“This is a common sense idea that I pushed though at Government level when I was Police and Fire Minister. It makes sense to double up on administration and support facilities where possible.
“From my own experience, both as a fire fighter and as MP, I know that the two services already work closely together so it is a natural step and enable more money to be used on the front line.
“In many cases this move will formalise existing arrangements, but I do believe we can get better value for money.”
“I know some people have raised concerns, but this is not a merger, this is two similar organisations sharing tasks and facilities where possible.”
