Mike Penning presents award to 'local hero'
1st July 2008
Mike Penning has presented an award to Mr Bert Inward at the annual MP Heroes event at the House of Commons.
Hemel MP, Mike Penning, joined MPs from all over England at an event to celebrate the outstanding achievements of older volunteers. The 8th annual ‘MP Heroes Tea Party’ was held on the Terrace at the Houses of Parliament.
Mike Penning nominated Mr Bert Inward for the award for his continued services to the community despite now being in his 90s. Bert founded Dacorum Rent Aid which is a charity that offers a rent guarantee scheme to help homeless people find their own accommodation in the private sector.
They also hold weekly advice surgeries to offer ongoing support once a tenancy has been established.
The event was organised by the Experience Corps which is a company that brokers relationships between people, the private and public sectors.
Speaking afterwards, Mike Penning said:
“As a society we owe a lot to individuals like Bert. The work he has done to help homeless people in Dacorum is of immense practical value and I was very happy to make Dacorum Rent Aid one of my ‘Charities of the Year’ for 2006-07.
“I welcome the opportunity provided by the ‘MP Heroes Tea Party’ to be able to show recognition and appreciation of the achievements and hard work Bert has put in to helping homeless people and I am truly honoured to have been able to present him an award to recognise the work he has done.”
