MP promotes hunt for Olympic torch bearers
1st July 2011
Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning is backing the search for local people to carry the Olympic torch on its journey to the Olympic stadium in London. The Olympic Torch Relay will take place over a 70 day period in the run up to the Olympics next year. Over 8,000 people will carry it through our towns and cities before it arrives at the opening ceremony on 27th July 2012.
Mike is backing Lloyds TSB – one of the main partners of the London Olympics – in their search for inspirational people to become torchbearers. If you know someone who has made a difference to their local community and deserves the chance to be a torchbearer, you can nominate them online at www.lloydstsb.com/carrytheflame.
Mike said:
“I know there are many people in Dacorum worthy of this honour. It would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in the Olympics.
“It would be great if we had a local resident carrying the Olympic torch for part of its journey.”
More than 8,000 will be invited to carry the torch in the nationwide relay procession.
