Mike Penning launches joint appeal for post-WW2 War Memorial
1st December 2010
Mike Penning MP is launching an appeal jointly with The Mayor of Dacorum, the Royal British Legion and the Hemel Hempstead Gazette, to raise money for a new memorial to commemorate Dacorum residents who have lost their lives in post-World War II conflicts.
Mike said:
“I was very moved by the number of people who turned out on Remembrance Sunday. The ongoing campaign in Afghanistan and the sad loss of two young Dacorum soldiers this year: Marine Matthew Harrison of Boxmoor and Acting Corporal David Barnsdale of Tring, has brought home to all of us the sacrifices our fighting forces continue to make on our behalf.
“I believe there is a need and a desire for a memorial in Dacorum specifically dedicated to those who have given their lives on our behalf since 1945. The sacrifices made by these young people and their families will not be forgotten.
“I therefore launch an appeal to raise money by public subscription – just as our forebears did before us – for a war memorial to be erected in memory of these young people who have died on our behalf.”
Other Dacorum residents who have died in wars since 1945 include:
Private Lionel Gordon Killick, aged 19, died on 12th May 1951 in Malaya
Lance-Corporal John Secrett, aged 18, died on 8th May 1952 in Malaya
Signalman G Collins, died 25th October 1965 in Aden
Sergeant Kevin Keoghane, aged 31, died 1982 on RFA Sir Galahad, Falkland Islands
Flight Lieutenant Jeff Bell, aged 28, died 17th October 1983 in a flying accident in the Falkland Islands
