Mike Penning welcomes Conservative pledge for first time buyers

2nd October 2007

Mike Penning has welcomed George Osborne's announcement that houses up to £250,000 would be exempt from stamp duty if the Conservatives win an election.

Hemel MP, Mike Penning, has welcomed George Osborne’s announcement at the Conservative Party Conference in Blackpool yesterday that under the Conservatives houses up to £250,000 would be exempt from stamp duty.

“This is excellent news for first time buyers,” he said, “it has become almost impossible for our young people to get on the housing ladder in Dacorum. They need all the help they can get and this would be a great benefit,” he said.

“In 1997 the average first time buyer paid nothing in stamp duty, today they are paying about £1,500. This new policy from George Osborne would take us back to the 1997 position.”
