Bertie Bear visits Markyate
2nd October 2010
Mike joined Markyate residents to welcome fundraiser Darren Heaton as he passed through Markyate on a sponsored walk to raise funds for Forces charities.
Darren, who is a wheelchair user, was supported by family, friends and Bertie Bear – the official mascot of the Grenadier Guards – and thanks to the generosity and efforts of Markyate people they were given accommodation and dinner. Darren, who has a son on active duty with the Grenadier Guards, is raising money for The Grenadier Guards Colonels Fund, SSAFA, St Dunstans and the Poppy Appeal.
Mike said:
“I was immensely proud and delighted by the efforts of local people to support fundraiser Darren Heaton as he passed through Markyate on his sponsored walk from High Peak in Derbyshire to Wellington Barracks.”
The photos shows Mike holding one of two limited edition prints that Darren gave to Markyate. One will be hung in the Jones Room at the Village Hall and the other will be auctioned by the Scouts to raise funds.
