Mike Penning MP and local teacher inspire young engineers
8th May 2012
Mike Penning MP presented London secondary students with encouragement awards for engineering at the prestigious Royal Institution last week.
The Celebration of Engineering event brought bright young students together with leading engineers in academia and industry to showcase the work they have been doing in smaller masterclasses over the past semester.
David Lane a former engineer and teacher at Adeyfield School in Hemel Hempstead led a masterclass on earthquake zones and how structural engineers design buildings to withstand significant natural forces. 14 year old students built structures that were tested on an ‘earthquake machine’ in the Institution’s famous Faraday Theatre.
Of the experience Mike Penning said: ‘I’m so pleased to see such inspiring scientists investing in our engineers of tomorrow. These children are going to be ensuring our road safety, building super structures and improving our quality of life – it is so important to nurture this talent and to encourage students to consider a career in engineering’.
