Mike Penning sponsors Diamond Jubilee Tree
9th February 2012
Hemel Hempstead MP, Mike Penning, has joined forces the Woodland Trust and sponsored a tree in a new ‘Parliament Grove’ of new trees in the National Forest in Leicestershire to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Mike said:
“This is a great project to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. I encourage anyone who would like to take part to do so. The project is open to everyone – individuals, families, schools, community groups and companies. You can take part at any level from sponsoring a Jubilee tree to planting your own Jubilee Wood.”
The Woodland Trust is working with landowners, communities and individuals across the UK to plant 6 million trees for the benefit of both people and wildlife.
Jubilee Woods celebration will:
- Create a beautiful and a permanent tribute to Her Majesty’s 60 year reign.
- Contribute towards the planting of 6 million new trees for the Jubilee.
- Help reforest the UK. Trees are essential to life; however the UK has barely a quarter of the woodland enjoyed by the average European state.
- Give more than a million children the chance to plant a tree. This simple act has the power to restore landscapes and inspire our children with a fresh love of nature.
- Bring communities together. Creating new woods helps communities craft a piece of natural heritage they can enjoy long into the future.
- Provide places for wildlife to thrive. A single English oak can host up to 500 different species.
