Mike Penning MP welcomes moves on one-way system in High Street
11th February 2011
Mike Penning has welcomed news that funding has been allocated to the provision of a one-way system in the Old High Street. The scheme would also allow for a taxi rank and some short-term parking along one side.
A consultation with residents and traders took place before Christmas and various suggestions are being incorporated into the plan.
Both Herts County Council and Dacorum Borough Council are backing the scheme and both are allocating funds towards it. The County Council has allocated money in this year’s budget to re-designate the road and the necessary signage for the conservation area. Dacorum has allocated £½ million towards regeneration of the area which includes providing wider pavement areas with seating. It is also hoped that the area will attract more events such as antique fairs.
Mike said:
“This is great news. There is so much potential for the Old High Street to become a busy retail centre with specialist shops by day and great pubs and restaurants in the evening.
“Being able to park to quickly pop in to one of the shops would be a great benefit to all Hemel residents.”
Mike first mooted the plan back in August 2008.
