MP urges schools to apply for free opera tickets
11th May 2012
Mike Penning, MP for the Hemel Hempstead, is urging local schools to take up the offer of free opera tickets.
Hemel Hempstead-based solicitors Underwoods are sponsoring a night at the opera at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford on Monday 11 June. The Cape Town Opera will perform a programme including spirituals, opera choruses and excerpts from the new South African Opera ‘Mandela Trilogy’ – a tribute to the extraordinary life of Nelson Mandela.
Local businesses are being asked to sponsor tickets for local students and all proceeds are being split equally between Cape Town Opera and Lord’s Taverners Cricket Charity for disabled and disadvantaged children.
Mike Penning said:
“I welcome this initiative by Underwoods and congratulate them on organising such an exciting and interesting event. This is a great opportunity for local students to experience opera and South African music as well as hear excerpts from a new opera dedicated to Nelson Mandela. I urge them to take up the offer. I also encourage local businesses to offer their support which will benefit local students and support a good cause at the same time.”
