MP gets glimpse of the future
13th May 2008
Mike Penning got a glimpse into the world of life enhancing medical technology when he visited local company Boston Scientific on Friday (9th May 2008).
The Shadow Health Minister was a guest at the new company offices of the medical device specialists in Breakspear Park, Hemel Hempstead.
He was shown the latest developments in minimally invasive technology that are helping patients live happier, healthier lives such as implantable defibrillators, pacemakers and a device that neutralises the agony of chronic back pain. Mike also had the opportunity to test drive the latest implantable defibrillator on a heart simulator that replicates how the device monitors the heart for irregular beats and automatically shocks it back to a steady pulse.
Minimally invasive technologies are performed through key hole and endoscopic procedures instead of traditional ‘open’ surgeries. By reducing incisions needed to reach internal organs such devices reduce the risk, trauma and the need for aftercare for patients.
“This has been a great opportunity to learn more about the technology being developed by Boston Scientific. It is vital that we harness the benefits of minimally invasive procedures in the NHS that can help reduce costs and improve patient care” said Mr Penning.
“I found the visit very productive in examining some of the challenges facing our health system and look forward to further discussions about the most effective ways of utilising the latest medical technology in a modern NHS.”
“I was also able to have a discussion with some local residents working at Boston Scientific. Having such a prominent multinational company in the area is a very positive factor for future economic growth of Hemel Hempstead.”
On welcoming Mr Penning to the Hemel Hempstead office, Boston Scientific General Manager, Mark Harty said,
“It’s has been a pleasure to show Mr Penning our new facilities at Breakspear Park, which provide include new training and meeting areas featuring state of the art technologies”
“His interest in how minimal invasive devices can be used to enhance patients’ lives is very refreshing and we are delighted that he has been able to visit our new offices, marking the beginning of a productive relationship between Boston Scientific and our local MP.”
