Attorney General agrees to inquiry
15th January 2008
Attorney General, Baroness Scotland, has agreed to an inquiry into murder suspect's release on bail.
As a result of the letter from Mike Penning, MP for Hemel Hempstead, the Attorney General Baroness Scotland has agreed to an inquiry into why 47-year-old Metropolitan Police Inspector, Garry Weddell was allowed out on bail after being accused of murdering his wife.
Mr Weddell then apparently went on to murder his mother-in-law before finally killing himself.
Mike Penning said:
”I am very pleased that the Attorney General is going to look into this case. I think many people are concerned that a suspected murderer was released on bail. I cannot imagine what the judge thought he was doing.
”There are two people now dead who would be alive today if Mr Weddell had not been released on bail. It is the court’s duty to protect the public, witnesses and, for that matter, defendants from harming themselves.
“This is a tragic case as there are now three children left without parents and without their grandmother.”
Mike has also called for the Department for Justice to carry out a review of the sentences guidelines given to judges.
