Attorney General refuses to appeal 'toddler fight' sentences
18th May 2007
Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith, told Mike Penning today that he will not review the sentences given out in the 'toddler fight' case.
Responding to Mike Penning’s letter asking him to review the lenient sentences handed out to the mother, aunt and grandmother of the children involved in the ‘toddler fight’ case, Attorney General Lord Goldsmith said that he will not appeal the sentencing.
He told Mike that he had reviewed the case and watched the video of the mother goading the toddlers to fight each other.
Afterwards, Mike Penning said: “I am astounded as I am sure every parent in the country will be. The behaviour of the perpetrators in this case was sickening and I found their actions deeply disturbing and am frankly appalled that they have got away with such lenient sentences.
“The young children’s father described the video footage as ‘like watching a dog fight’. It this had been a dog fight then the perpetrators would have received custodial sentences.
The women each received a one-year suspended sentence with 100 hours of community service.
