Hemel MP Mike Penning visits Hazard Alley at the Safety Centre at Milton Keynes
Mike Penning today visited Hazard Alley at the Safety Centre in Milton Keynes. Hazard Alley is the first purpose-built interactive centre where children aged 7 to 12 can experience a number of hazardous scenarios in perfect safety.
The scenarios are wide ranging and a child could potentially face any number of them every day. They include fire safety, road safety, drug awareness, first aid, home safety, shoplifting, crime and consequences.
The centre aims to reduce the number of accidents by teaching children about accidents that can occur in everyday situations. The children visit realistic mock-ups of everyday locations and discuss the various hazards. They then discuss how they would deal with each situation.
After his visit Mike Penning said: “This is very impressive. Every child should get a chance to visit a centre like this. I do really believe that this helps reduce the number of accidents – especially involving children. Any parent will know the constant worry about their child’s safety – whether it is riding a bike on the road, fire in the home or drugs on the streets. Hazard Alley gives children the chance to think about how they would deal with all these issues and gives valuable advice.”
