MP joins calls for Post Office Card Account successor to stay with the post office

21st August 2008

Mike Penning, MP for Hemel Hempstead, and Cllr Andrew Williams, Leader of Dacorum Borough Council, received a petition of over 700 cards from Chaulden Sub-postmaster Mr Hardip Walia. The petitioners are calling for the successor to the Post Office Card Account to remain a post office product.

The Government is soon to choose the successor to the Post Office Card Account (POCA) and postmasters around the country are concerned that if the successor does not remain a post office product they will lose a lot of business and many will be forced to close.

Mike Penning said:
“In order to ensure the future viability of our local post offices, the Government should be increasing the types of services they can provide not reducing them. It is vital that the successor to the Post Office Card Account remain a post office product.”

“I will be writing to the Minister expressing my views on this and giving my complete support to our local post offices,” he added.

Cllr Andrew Williams added:
“As a regular user of Chaulden Post Office, I fully support calls for the new account to be available at the local post office. Small post offices need all the help they can get as they provide a much needed service, especially for the elderly and most vulnerable.”

Already this week, it has been announced that five post office branches in Dacorum will be closed.
