Tug-of-war teams pull for charity
21st September 2007
Mike Penning uses his expertise as Captain of the House of Commons tug-of-war team to start the competition in aid of DENS - Dacorum's homelessness charity.
Mike Penning, MP for Hemel Hempstead, got the DENS Charity Tug of War Challenge under way on Thursday 6th September at Ye Old Red Lion Pub in Nash Mills. DENS organised the event in conjunction with DSG international to raise funds for their new Day Centre.
Mike has chosen DENS – Dacorum’s homelessness charity - as one of his Charities of the Year and is a particular supporter of the new Day Centre.
“The provision of overnight accommodation and a hot meal is great but I really feel for DENS’ clients when at 8am in the morning they are turned out to wander through the streets carrying all their belongings. DENS’ new Day Centre provides a much-needed place for them to go, but at the moment, DENS can only afford to open it three days a week. It would be great if this could be extended to 5 or even 6 or 7.
“This was a very enjoyable fund-raising event. I congratulate all the teams that took part, especially third time winners ‘The Red Lion’ and runners-up, Renewable Energy Systems.”
The teams taking part were: Barclays, DSG International, Renewable Energy Systems, High Street Baptist Church Tring, DENS and the Red Lion Pub.
Participants enjoyed a barbecue hosted by Ye Olde Red Lion.
