MP calls for Parliamentary Debate on Health Service Cuts

24th March 2006

Speaking in the chamber of the House of Commons, Mike Penning called for a Parliamentary debate on the future of the health service and, in particular, cuts that will be made.

Calling for a debate on the future of the health service, Mike Penning said:
“My constituents face a £30 million cut in health care, leading to the closure of all the acute facilities at our hospital, including a brand spanking new stroke unit.”

He went on to point out that:
“The Prime Minister's constituency, Sedgefield, gets £1,210 per head for health care, but my constituents get £960. That is a shortfall of £250 per head and could have kept some of those departments open.”

Afterwards, Mike said:
“It seems incredible that a brand new department such as the stroke unit is already threatened with closure. My constituents want a level playing field, not one rule for the people of Sedgefield and another for the people of Hemel Hempstead.”
