MP backs Commons motion supporting local newspapers

26th November 2009

Mike Penning has signed Early Day Motion 35 calling on the Government to support local newspapers and journalism.

Mike Penning, MP for Hemel Hempstead, has supported a House of Commons motion praising the work of local newspapers and calling on the Government to help stem the decline of an industry which has seen over 1,000 editorial posts cut or left unfilled since Summer 2008.

Mike said:
“In Hemel Hempstead we are very fortunate in having good local newspaper coverage of our area. The Hemel Hempstead Gazette and free paper Herald Express provide a valuable source of local news and events in Dacorum. They promote local businesses and showcase the work of local people. I am proud to have worked alongside them on campaigns ranging from the loss of services at Hemel Hospital to community sports and social projects.

“Our local press provide the only coverage of court cases, council meetings and local elections and as a result play a vital role in maintaining our democracy and holding our elected representatives to account.

“Local newspapers all over the country are now facing unprecedented difficulties. The recession and the rise of the internet have hit their businesses hard. It is therefore vital that the Government looks at ways of ensuring their survival and developing local journalism for the future”.
