MP welcomes "I want a referendum" lobby of Parliament

Mike Penning welcomed the "I want a referendum" campaign lobby of Parliament this week.
Mike Penning MP for Hemel Hempstead welcomed the “I want a referendum” campaign lobby of Parliament this week. The cross-party campaign is calling for the Government to hold a referendum on the EU Treaty. Mike said: “We were promised a referendum on the EU Constitution. When that failed it was watered down to become the EU Treaty and the promise of a referendum disappeared. My view is that it hasn’t changed enough to negate a referendum. The Spanish foreign minister proudly told his country that 98% of the content of the constitution is in the treaty.
“Our democracy goes back hundreds of years and the British people elect our Parliament to decide on issues that affect our daily lives. It is wrong for any government to give away some of these powers without consulting the people. I am particularly concerned about the threat to our national veto – every national veto outside of defence could be abolished without the need for any further treaty.
“This is why I want the government to hold a referendum on the EU Treaty.”
