Mike Penning MP to attend VC Commemoration
31st August 2007
Local MP, Mike Penning, will join with Kings Langley villagers on 9th September to commemorate the award of the Victoria Cross to Christopher Cox a stretcher-bearer in the First World War.
Christopher Cox was a Kings Langley resident who served as a stretcher-bearer in the First World War. He was awarded the Victoria Cross in March 1917.
In March this year, on the 90th anniversary of the event, a memorial plaque was unveiled by one of his sons, Ian Cox, at a location near to the village of Achiet-le-Grand in France.
At this commemoration, on the 9th September, Christopher Cox’s family will unveil a second memorial at All Saints Church, Kings Langley.
Mike Penning said:
“I am honoured to have been invited to attend this event. It is important for us to recognise the debt we owe to previous generations who fought to ensure our freedom and our way of life. When people see this plaque in years to come, they will learn of the courage of this brave young man who repeatedly went to the aid of injured soldiers, saving their lives, even though he was under machine gun fire at the time.
“It is all the more poignant as 90 years on our young servicemen and women are still risking their lives in the service of their country.”
