Lord Parkinson

25th January 2016

Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning has paid tribute to Lord Parkinson who has died aged 84.

Cecil Parkinson started his political career in Hemel Hempstead and was Chairman of the Hemel Hempstead Conservative Association in the late 1960s, before he won election to Parliament in 1970.

He later went on to become one of the leading names in the Conservative Party as Chairman of the party and was instrumental in winning the 1983 election. He subsequently served in Margaret Thatcher’s Cabinet as Secretary of State for Energy and Secretary of State for Transport.

Mike Penning said:
“Cecil Parkinson was a leading figure in the Conservative Party both nationally and locally. He went on to represent the nearby constituency of Hertsmere, but he maintained his links with the Hemel Hempstead constituency through membership of Ashridge Golf Club. He was always happy to offer his support.

“I send my condolences to his family and they are in my thoughts and prayers today.”
