Mike Penning attends medal presentation for war veteran
28th May 2013
Mike Penning attended a surprise presentation ceremony for Flight Lieutenant Ronald Ray DFM who received his long-overdue WW2 campaign medals during a visit to 1187 (Hemel Hempstead) Air Cadets Squadron on Thursday 23rd May.
The medals were presented by Wing Commander Paul Mimpress RAFVR(T), Officer Commanding Herts & Bucks Wing Air Training Corps and Mike Penning also presented Flt Lt Ray with a veterans badge.
Flt Lt Ron Ray was presented with his Distinguished Flying Medal personally by King George VI in 1944 but had never claimed his campaign medals.
After the presentation Flt Lt Ray shared his recollections of his wartime flying experiences with ATC cadets.
Mike Penning said:
“I commend the work of 1187 Sqn Civilian Instructor Steve Crofts who researched Ron Ray’s career and located family of Ron’s crewmate and close friend from Canada and it was great that they were able to attend.
“We owe a great deal to our war veterans and I am delighted that Ron has finally been presented with his campaign medals.”
