Mike Penning comments on MP pay rise reports
23rd May 2013
Hemel Hempstead MP, Mike Penning, has commented on news reports that the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) will recommend an increase in MPs’ salary of £10,000 when it releases its report next month.
Mike said:
“I’ve always said that I believe MPs should not be involved in making the decision about how much they earn. 99.9% of people have no say over their pay so I don’t see that MPs should be any different.
“To be frank, it would be ludicrous for MPs to take such a large pay increase whilst at the same time telling the rest of the country to tighten their belts. Most people are not getting any pay rise at the moment – and indeed some people are getting a pay cut.
“I pledge, here and now, that if such a pay increase were to go ahead then I will donate it to charity.”
