IT’S ALL OVER FOR BLUE LIGHT SERVICES AT HEMEL

Mike Penning by Magic Roundabout sign with 'No A&E'

So it has finally happened. The A&E and related blue light services – Intensive Care, Acute Stroke Unit, Cardiac Care Unit, Catheter Lab and all operating theatres have been shut down. Hemel has lost its acute general hospital. For the first time since 1929 we have no operating theatres or surgical services. It is an utter betrayal of the people of Hemel Hempstead. Quite simply this should not be happening to a town this size.
I, and I know many local people, have very real worries about the reality of trying to get through traffic to Watford. On top of that there are real concerns about whether Watford can cope with the numbers.

We now learn that there may be problems with the Private Finance Initiative that is supposed to fund the development of the new hospital at Watford. While there is any doubt over the finance of the new hospital, they should not have closed Hemel’s A&E.

A FINAL THANK YOU

I am sure I join all the people of Hemel Hempstead when I say a bit thank you to all the surgeons, doctors, matrons, sisters, nurses, porters and other dedicated staff who have so professionally served our community over so many years. In particular, I would like to thank those who worked at our hospital in last few years as they have had to cope with the constant threat of closure and the deliberate running down of facilities. I sympathise with those who have lost their jobs, or now have to face costly and tiresome journeys to Watford or St Albans to continue their caring and essential service to us all.
