Hemel Hempstead MP, Mike Penning, has paid tribute to Lord Lyell who died yesterday.
Lord Lyell was elected MP for Hemel Hempstead in 1979 when he defeated Labour’s Robin Corbett. He served as Hemel Hempstead’s MP until 1983. He subsequently served as MP for Mid Bedfordshire and later for North East Bedfordshire. He was created a life peer in 2005.
Lord Lyell served in a number of senior roles during Margaret Thatcher’s government and was promoted to Attorney General by John Major in 1992. He served as Attorney General until 1997.
He continued to live in the constituency at Markyate.
Mike Penning said:
“I am very sorry to hear that Nick has lost his 12-year-long battle with cancer. He has fought it courageously and when I spoke to him just last week he was still fighting it.
“Many local residents will remember him for the work he did in Hemel Hempstead and the help he gave them. He was a well known local figure and will be sorely missed.
“My thoughts are with his wife Susanna and their family at this time.”
