Mike Penning, MP for Hemel Hempstead, has won support from the Attorney General for a review of the sentence handed out to a man who beat and bit an eight-week-old baby so severely she will be blind and deaf for the rest of her life.

The man, who was living with the baby’s mother at the time in Hemel Hempstead, was sentenced to 13 years and 9 months for the assault.

Local MP, Mike Penning, said:
“This was an absolutely horrifying attack on an eight-week-old baby. I am absolutely appalled at every aspect of this case which has left the child in need of round-the-clock care for the rest of her life.

“I wrote to Attorney General Dominic Grieve calling on him to send the sentence for review and am very pleased that he agreed with me.

The case will now be referred to the Court of Appeal.
