Mike Penning attended the launch of this year’s Poppy Appeal in Markyate and presented Cllr Bert Chapman with his 30-years service award.

Local Member of Parliament, Mike Penning attended the launch of the Markyate Poppy Appeal at a ‘Coffee and Cakes’ event at the Methodist Church on Friday (23rd October). The Markyate Family History Society also provided an interesting display.

Speaking at the event, Mike Penning, who has chosen the Royal British Legion as his charity of the year, spoke of the invaluable work of the Legion in looking after the welfare and wellbeing of veterans, serving men and women and their families.

Mike also presented local Councillor, Bert Chapman, with a medal in recognition of 30 years as a collector for the Poppy Appeal.

Speaking afterwards, Mike said:
“I congratulate Judith Brierley and her team on the organisation of the launch event and wish them a successful appeal. It was also a great pleasure to be able to present Bert with his 30 years’ service medal.

“Now, perhaps more than ever in recent times, the work of the Royal British Legion is of vital importance. Sadly some veterans are suffering as a result of the economic situation whilst at the same time we have young servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan and needing support.

“Our freedom does not come cheap and we owe our serving forces and our veterans a great deal. I urge everyone to dig deep this year to support the Poppy Appeal.”
