Dear Sir,
Cash Cameras
Some while ago I wrote expressing my fear that the government were deploying speed cameras more as a way of raising stealth taxes than to improve road safety. I learned recently from Herts County Council that in the last year in Hertfordshire the revenue from speeding fines in the county had increased by nearly £1 million. Ok, so more cameras have been deployed and sadly more people must have been caught and fined for breaking the speed laws. At, least, I suppose, the extra revenue raised could be used by the police to improve road safety? Or perhaps it will be used to fund another 25 new police officers? Not a chance. The entire additional monies raised go to the government. Just another stealth tax.
