Mike Penning MP presents badges to over 70 veterans

22 May 2009

Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning presented badges to veterans of all branches of the armed forces at the British Legion Club on Thursday 21st May.

Peter Taylor, Chairman of the Club welcome the veterans and their families to the event and Chairman of the Hemel Hempstead Branch of the Royal British Legion, Royal Navy veteran Peter Gibbons, acted as Master of Ceremonies.

Mike said:

“It was a very enjoyable evening and I am honoured to be able to present these badges to recognise those who have served our country. For the first time, I awarded a badge to a veteran of the Home Guard.

“I strongly support the raising of the profile of our serving armed forces and our veterans. We owe a huge debt to the men and women who have fought – and are still fighting – for our freedom and our country.”

On the same evening the Hemel Lions Club presented the Royal British Legion, Hemel Hempstead Branch with a cheque for £1000, to help its work supporting veterans and those serving in the military in welfare matters. Mike Penning also presented monies donated as a result of articles he has written and surveys he has completed.

Mike added:

“I thank the Club and Branch for their continued support and hospitality. The success of the veterans badge scheme – and the take-up locally – means we have already scheduled our fourth such presentation for September. I would also like to thank the photographer, Martin Smith of Silver Images, who gave his time and services free of charge.”

The veterans badge is available to anyone who has served in the armed forces. Badges are also available for the Merchant Navy, Women’s Land Army and Women’s Timber Corps and Bevin Boys although to qualify for these badges the recipient must have served during wartime.
