I have linked up Peter Lilley and David Gauke, MPs for the neighbouring constituencies of Hitchin & Harpenden and South West Herts, to launch a campaign to limit the expansion of Luton Airport. Having studied the expansion proposals – arrogantly named “The Master Plan” - put together by Luton Airport, I am shocked to see that they propose expansion beyond even the Government’s own proposals. The Government proposed expansion on a scale of Gatwick, Luton Airport now propose expansion on a scale of Heathrow! Two runways, three terminals, 30 million passengers and – you’ve guessed it – no new infrastructure! The Airport operators give the impression that all is signed and sealed. I don’t believe this is true. It is a ploy to discourage opposition. Luton Airport is the only “London” airport without a direct rail link to central London, so most passengers would be arriving by road. Our local roads are congested enough without London’s second airport in our midst. The environmental effects of such a large airport in our area are worrying. A large part of the land that would be used is greenbelt and the noise and air pollution can only be imagined. I urge all Markyate residents to support our campaign. As part of the campaign, Peter Lilley, David Gauke and I have launched a petition to Parliament that calls for Luton to remain a medium haul, medium sized airport and for the Government to refuse plans for Luton to replace Gatwick as London’s second airport. I urge Markyate residents to sign the petition. Forms can be downloaded from: www.mikepenning.com/downloads/airportpetition.doc.
Methodist Church re-opening
On a lighter note, I was delighted to support Markyate Methodist Church’s re-opening on 28th January and to meet local Minister Rev. Robert Foster and their longest-service congregation member, Nora Flitton. The refurbishment and extension are very impressive and it is great that it not only provides a place of worship but also a facility that can be used by the whole village community. This is precisely what village life is all about. |
