Dear Sir,
The issue of school discipline seems to have hit the political agenda. The Government say they want all schools to take on pupils who have been expelled from elsewhere.
They don’t say why they think their behaviour will get any better as a result. Nor do they explain why it’s fair to make good and successful schools accept disruptive and unruly pupils who will only damage the quality of other people’s education.
At the same time, Michael Howard – the Conservative Leader – announces plans to educate expelled pupils in new ‘turnaround’ schools, where they will follow a proper curriculum, pursue real qualifications and have their progress and behaviour closely monitored.
I, for one, would prefer to let hard-working pupils get on and learn, while those who want to cause trouble are dealt with elsewhere. Michael Howard has it right. The Government should think again.
