On Sunday 8th October I joined with South West Herts MP, David Gauke, to lead a bed push from Hemel to Watford. We were overwhelmed with the support we received – we had about 1,000 walkers at the start with between 200 and 300 making it the full 10 miles to the finish at Watford Hospital.
Not only did so many people join in the march, but local residents shouted their support as we passed their houses, cars tooted their horns and two of the pubs offered us free soft drinks…
Local and national news picked up on our efforts and the story of two MPs and their constituents pushing a hospital bed through the streets of Dacorum and Watford seemed to encapsulate the national mood. Although, I’m not sure what some of the people out for the afternoon in Watford High Street thought about it though.
The plight of Hemel Hospital highlights concerns felt all over the country about hospital closures, A&E; department closures, ward closures….St Albans too is under threat. We need to keep up the pressure if we want to see our local hospitals saved.
